The perfect team member, can you give me the characteristics of that person. Well I started writing in my journal a few years ago and I just recently looked back to an entry that I had called the Perfect Team Member. I listed out attributes that I felt the perfect team member should have and how they would interact with me and our entire organization. Well, let me tell you over the years I have come in contact with so many people, but some just don’t stay.
As you know my mentor is Jim Rohn, such a great man and an awesome teacher. It’s unfortunate that I was unable to see him in person before he passed on but I owe it to his messages that helped me with my business, life & spirituality. If you take a close look I wrote down some names to the right of this journal entry with some names of people who I felt were perfect team members and how they were an integral part of the Organization. However, only 1 of those people remain today, and it just goes to show you that team members come in all shapes, sizes and personalities. As a Leader we need to be able to connect with each Individual on their specific level.
In my Business we have a volunteer Organization and nobody has to follow you if they don’t want to. They don’t need to buy into your Leadership or your vision and as Jim Rohn always told me, “Lincoln, some just don’t stay. You should not subscribe to the Why is this class.” I used to ask myself Why are they not staying, what am I doing wrong, Am I not a great Leader? What’s going on with my Leadership skills? That is when I launched fully into Personal development so that I could make myself a better Leader.
If you see from the photo I listed out some of the traits I figured a good Leader should have;
- Hard working
- Attended events
- Entrepreneurial spirit
Recently after I added God Fearing which should have been to the top. Then I started thinking didn’t Jesus have a team, were they perfect? And as you know one of Jesus’s team members betrayed him, one said he didn’t know him 3 times, yet he still forgave them and he knew it was going to happen. So I took on that philosophy. I know nobody is perfect especially me, so how could I hold someone else to those standards?
I decided that If I tried to Lead like Jesus to the best of my ability that people would eventually see my passion, and that is happening now for me and I know that it can also happen for you.
Question: What lessons have you learned around leading a team, your family or Organization?
