No need to hit 1000%

You don't have to bat 1000%

What’s your batting average? If you know anything about baseball you know that all hitters are measured by their batting average and on base percentage. If you are not familiar with baseball let me explain.

Say on average of 1 out of every 10 times you step into the batters box, you hit the ball and get on base 3 out of 10 times. Then you know that your batting average is 30% or .300 in baseball out of 1000.  See these baseball players are paid Millions of dollars to make sure their batting averages stay high and they are on base more times than they strike out.  Some of the average baseball players average around .250 or 25% up to .350 or 35% which is really a high percentage. Lets break this down further, stick with me here.

So you are saying that these players are paid Millions of dollars to STRIKE OUT, or don’t get on base 7/10 times? This means they are out more than they are on base. How can this be? These players spend their lifetimes practicing and perfecting their swing, perfecting their craft, and improving their game. So how is it that they are paid Millions for this? Well, its a skill that MOST people would never acquire. It’s not luck that they made it to the big leagues, it was hours upon hours of hard work and dedication to their craft. While you were asleep, the people who get ahead are up working. Are you one of those such people?

Do you know your batting average? No matter your job, your business, your personal life, you should calculate your batting average. How many times are you actually getting done what you set out to do that day? How many calls did you make? How many relationships did you build? How many friends did you call just to say Hi?

As we embark upon 2011, it should be your duty to increase your batting average. Don’t allow another year to pass without you improving your numbers and perfecting whatever it is you do.

I guess I determine in by seeing what’s working and what’s not. I’m creating some products right now, hopefully they will improve my batting average!

Great analogy and points. It’s amazing how low professional batting average but how high they get paid. You could say a person get’s paid a lot for failing(At batting).

I think a persons “Batting average” should be determined by the value they add. This can be done through blogging and speaking.

    Great post as always.

Dan, yes its amazing isn’t it? The average Professional in baseball only hits about 30% or has an on base percentage of 30% yet they make millions of dollars. In our industry you hit it on the head the “Value” that we provide and add the others it our batting average. We need to keep improving this daily. You are a master of providing value.
