Leadership is all around us. How we took charge – 3 steps

A Look at Relevant Church

There are leaders all around us and we all lead in different places and on different levels. And we all know the Levels of Leadership that John C Maxwell teaches. This past weekend  our Sound and Media production team at Church demonstrated Leadership, not me, our team.

I am apart of our Sound and Media team at Relevant Church in Locust Grove GA a suburb just 40miles south of Downtown Atlanta. I knew when my wife and I started attending this Church last year June that something had to change for us. Our lives had to change because GOD was calling us to do greater things and meet new people, and get to know him closer. Now we had never served in a Church environment before in any capacity and it was out of our comfort zone. However, after attending service just 2 times, I marked the box to become apart of the Sound and Media team.

knowing about my sweaty palms, and having to shake people’s hands are my worst fear because it feels like (to them) shaking someone’s hands that just forgot to dry after coming out of the bathroom (Not Good), but I had to push past this fear that was in my heart, that was holding me back from a Ministry. So I went forward and joined the Sound and Media production team and my wife decided she would go in to help out in the Kids ministry with the babies. Now, almost a year later believe it or not our spiritual walk and our family and business ventures have kicked off big time and we are truly in a place God wants us to be at, and there is so much more growth to go and its been a blessing.

What our Sound and Media team does is set up all the Screens, Camera’s, Staging Scenery, Instruments, recording equipment and everything pertaining to our ministry involving media. We have one Director that directs two teams of people who consist of a Lighting person, A computer person, A sound board person, and a Camera person. This Leader has to foresee everything when it pertains to how the flow of the service is going to go, from when the lights go down and up and how they are shining on stage and how the speakers are positioned to when to click on videos and zooming in and out. This is allot to co-ordinate I know and it takes all of us working together. My job is the computer which controls the sermon notes, the Worship song lyrics, and the videos we play, trust me its a nerve wrecking job because one wrong click and you messed up some serious stuff. (Trust me I feel the pressure) Needless to say, I love what I do at our Church, and having the opportunity to work with other great folks and have fun and set the stage for the congregation to receive blessings because of what we setup. Here is a video of how we setup.

However, last weekend our Production Director Clint was set to be Married and he would be out that entire Setup weekend so someone else had to step in. I am always someone who likes to keep the standards high with whatever I do and I go 100% so I stepped up to the challenge still having to run the computer. However, I knew I knew absolutely NOTHING about working the Sound Board or the lights, so what was I going to do? I had to lean on the team. Being a Leader is not about knowing everything, it’s about trusting the people on your team to perform and to lead at what they do. Each one of us took on Leadership rolls. Even-though at the end of the day I was given credit for having kept the team in tack, I deflected that praise to our team as It would not have went smoothly without them, and I absolutely needed them. So what Lesson’s did I learn from this experience?

1. Each person Leads themselves – Each person on the team knew what they were supposed to do, and stepped up to the plate to get it done. It was not about any one person. Lead yourself first before you can lead others.

2. You are as good as your team – You need to make sure that your team knows their responsibilities and how their little piece ties into the overall scheme of things. It’s the BIG picture that’s important.

3. Set the Culture – The Culture of the Organization was already set, by our Church Leadership and the Sound and Media Directors. We know that we expect excellence in everything that we do and if you can’t step up to the level of excellence, you won’t thrive in this environment.

Our Church right now has to set up and Tear down every week, so it takes a lot of effort by a lot of special people working together as a team for the Glory of God.

Question: What Leaders are around you that make you look good?

kimanzi when you can count on people it makes a big difference. In this instance the team stepped up big. No one person deserves all the credit.

Great question at the end! It really is true that each member has to step up and do their part. No one person can do everything! A good leader realizes their weaknesses and utilizes others in those areas.

Sounds like you did a great job and learned in the process- good job!

Love this line- “Lead yourself first before you can lead others.”

To answer your question, I think my spouse and mom make me look good. I couldn’t make it without them!

TC I definitely did learn, it was a tough thing to have to juggle and make sure everything goes perfect for the glory of GOD. Being a leader sometimes gets overshadowed by the individual people that make the keep cohesive. I absolutely love the folks I work with, they Rock!
