Leadership is a Process

No, Leader becomes a Leader just by waking up and claiming that they are a Leader. It’s really going to take some Personal Growth. As you know I attended the Chick-Fil-A-Leadercast last week and of course John Maxwell spoke on Leadership and also his new book that will be out this fall called The 15 Laws of Personal Growth.

The 15 Laws of Personal Growth - I received 3 of them.

I was so blown away when I heard these 3 of the 15 Laws of Personal growth, I wanted to make sure that I share them with you.

  1. The Law of Intentionality – Growth doesn’t just happen, you need a personal growth plan and you have to work at it.
    1. The Choice you make, makes you. Make Intentional choices
    2. Most people want to change their circumstances, but never want to change their lives. Everything gets better when we get better.
    3. The secret of your success is determined by your daily agenda.
    4. The law of diminishing return – The longer you wait you won’t do anything.
    5. The best investment you can make is in yourself.
  2. The Law of awareness – We must know ourselves to grow ourselves.
    1. Requirement – What’s required of me?
    2. Return – What gives me the greatest return. What do we do well.
    3. You want to work in your strength zone.
    4. What’s rewarded is what we keep moving toward.
  3. The Law of Environment – Growth thrives in conducive environments.
    1. Do you have a growing environment and growing friends?
    2. What is a Growth Environment?
      1. A growth environment is a place where others are ahead of you. If you are at the head of the class you are in the wrong place.
      2. It’s where you are continually challenged.
      3. Where your focus is forward.
      4. Where the atmosphere is affirming, and the people want to be better.
      5. Where I am often out of my comfort zone.
      6. Where I wake up excited.
      7. Where failure is not your enemy.
      8. Where other people are growing.
      9. Where people desire change.
      10. Where growth is modeled, where it’s expected of you to grow.

When John Maxwell shared those few laws with us I was blow away at its simplistic nature these laws are yet not many of us follow them. So my question to you today is this.

Question: How are you gauging your progress as a Leader? How do you know you are growing?

I can’t wait to read his new book. Thank you so much for sharing, I had no idea he had a new book coming out until I read your post!!!

I think it’s so important for a leader to be growth driven. If we want to reach our potential then we must be growing and developing. Great notes bro.

Absolutely Dan. When he mentioned the new book I got so excited. I can’t wait either to get my hands on it. Growth daily is what Leaders must absolutely focus on. I think I’ve read those notes over and over now for days. Have you read all of his books?

      • http://danblackonleadership.com/ Dan Black

John has so many insights and thoughts it’s amazing. Yes, I have read all of his books.

        • http://www.lincolnparks.com Lincoln Parks

Wow, I still have a few more books of his to read. Awesome Dan, no wonder you are a Leadership guru.

So many great points! I love what you said about not being at the head of the class- you must have someone to help you grow and mature, someone to mentor you!

I also love this part- “We must know ourselves to grow ourselves”, I feel like I spent too many years not knowing myself- thank God I’ve moved past that. I hope others learn faster than I did.

TC John Maxwell is a master teacher and I want to grow into a super teacher like him one day. I have so much to learn. John Maxwell always says if you are Leading and you look back and nobody is following you are just taking a walk.

      • http://tcavey.blogspot.com/ TCAvey

You already are a leader and I have confidence you will continue to grow!

I’m with you, I don’t want to just be taking a walk!

          Thank you TC!

Question about leaders taking a walk: would that be like the one I work for in a start-up? It’s sales and marketing. He’s told me many times that bumpiness is normal in the beginning. I have tried to stay with him for almost two years…basically, I’m just asking how to deal with this person who doesn’t make me feel comfortable? I a person believing positive makes positive. He makes it seem like negative. Making negative. He calls it passion. I call it a vat of confusion. Did Mr. Maxwell say anything toward the future leaders?

          • http://www.lincolnparks.com Lincoln Parks

Maggy, it appears that the person you have Leading your start-up may not have read much of the Bible because Leadership is called Servant Leadership. Making your team, organization better and Leading like Jesus whom was a servant to all. If you are not comfortable, you should develop your own Leadership skills and prepare your platform. Do you have a desire to do so? His passion could drive people (you) away if its not channeled. Mr. Maxwell, has tons of books that reach out to Leaders because you are one now because you have influence over someone at this moment. I would start off by getting his book the 21 irrefutable laws of Leadership. This will help you with some insight.

wow, I am blown away by the principles! They are simple and so profound.

For now, my gauge is discipline and focus. When I lose that I know am faltering.

im right along with you Ngina. We will just be blowing in the wind without focus.
