Growth Requires a Teachable Attitude

Growth requires a change in attitude.

You know growth does require an attitude change and in order for you to grow to the next level you need to take some very uncomfortable steps that you are not really ready to take without seeing the end or what’s about to happen next. I wan to share a short story with you on how through growth in Corporate America it allowed me to prepare myself for things yet to come and unseen.

When I arrived in the parking deck of the Building smack dab in the middle of downtown Atlanta I would sit for about 15 minutes or so (if I had the time), and I was not rushing to get to my desk, I would park by the nearest railing and put my window down and just look over the city. I would pray, and dread going into the building because I knew that my GOD given talents and abilities did not lie in that place and I was only doing damage to myself by staying there.

I ready just today a quote by Richard Branson on the top 5 things in business that will make you happen and #1 was to Do What You Love or Don’t Do it at All. Wow! Really, what was I doing in this place? How was I going to reach my full potential in Christ and would really leaving a Corporate Job allow me to do greater things? No, I wasn’t ready I thought to myself, I still need time to grow as a Christian blogger, writer and make sure my Network Marketing business could sustain my family.

But how could I grow if I didn’t like what I was doing? How was God using me to touch other people, I didn’t have a clue, but I guess I was in some capacity helping someone in the building through conversation. Then I woke up, the 15 minutes was over and I needed to get into work quickly before they marked me late. Uhhh, I truly did not like someone telling me when I could take off to watch my daughters ballet event, than Jesus reminded me to be patient because my time would come. And boy did it ever come!

How could I be so frustrated with doing what everyone else was doing and that was providing for my family. I felt truly guilty that I wanted to leave my job and do something else because there was no room for growth and it felt like I was stuck in a box that was not growing or moving at all. So what was I to do at this point?

  1. I needed to embrace my environment - No matter the horrid circumstances, I decided to embrace where I was and be thankful.
  2. I needed to remind myself that God was in control - He controls it all, and our jobs is just another location.
  3. I became open to learning – I wanted to learn more and become better on my job. (or else God would not bless me with anything else)
  4. I wanted to become better at helping people – I found something at work that I could latch onto and become better at it.
I knew at that moment that in order for me to get where I needed to be I had to absolutely grow and change my attitude towards my job.
Guess What?
I have that Job no longer, I am now a full-time Entrepreneur who took the necessary steps to become even more successful once the timing was right. I was lucky that my preparation (part-time business) helped to save my family in this instance. There are many people that are not so prepared and they are not ready for what could happen to you at an instance and that is truly unfortunate. God asks us to be wise in our ways and actions, and as the head of the household I was preparing for a time like this, and luckily that growth period and attitude change made it necessary for my growth.
  • While reading I found these few tips from the passage.. (I can’t take credit for these)

Godly habits take time to develop. Remember that your character is the sum total of your habits. You can’t claim to have integrity unless it is your habit to always be honest.

Your habits define your character. There is only one way to develop the habits of Christlike character: You must practice them – and that takes time!

These character-building habits are often called “spiritual disciplines,” and they include such things as meditation, prayer, fasting, Bible study, simplicity, stewardship, solitude, submission, service and evangelism.

Thanks for sharing this, Lincoln. Stay true to what you are called to do. I believe that God honors our planning and desire to succeed when we keep Him first.

Charles it is definitely my pleasure. I felt the need that I needed to really share how I felt and the channels that I needed to go through. I still have so much more growth to go and more things to share. God is definitely leading me to help people and learn from others. I want to soak up as much information as possible and share it with as many people that will listen. Thank you for the encouragement, I truly appreciate you stopping by and sharing.

    Good for you!
You’re right, daily we have to decide to make the best of what we are given. When faithful with that, God will give us more. Sometimes that takes time. Sometimes God says “Wait”.
That can be hard to hear, but God knows best.
As I’ve grown in my walk with Christ, I’ve learned that I have more control over my attitude than I had previously thought. I could decide to have a good day no matter what, or I could decide that no matter what my day was going to suck.
It my choice. Once I decided to have a good attitude, God helped me find the blessings in each day.
I’m reading the book Love Does by Bob Goff. You should read it. It’s an easy read with good lessons.

I had to learn that TC. I had to learn that I needed to be patient and be thankful for what I had. I heard songs about waiting on God on the radio almost everyday, and it was killing me but I knew he has a master plan.

I am going to write that book down and look at it now on Amazon. Thank you for the suggestion TC.

Growing in Christ is a life long journey! Being a Christian isn’t for the faint of heart :)

Love Does is a great book. I hope to do a book review of it, if time allows.

I really like your 4 points Lincoln – they are so key when it comes to promotion and moving to the next level. Embracing my position and giving the reigns to God has always worked. not always easy as you have pointed out, but always work without a doubt.

    • http://www.lincolnparks.com Lincoln Parks

Thank you Ngina. I do believe that the key to success in anything is by letting go and allowing God to take the reigns. As soon as I put him first, the flood gates opened. Like they say a little bit of doubt and you are out.

I like that last line! ( God help me :) )

Great points Lincoln. I think it’s important to maintain a teachable attitude no mater our situation or circumstance. If we want to be moving forward then we need to be growing and learning.
