Change your Do goals to Be goals instead.

Change your Do goals to Be goals

My wife and I sat down to discuss what our goals were and what we needed to do for the next year. So we wanted to figure out what our Religious goals, Family goals, & Business goals were for this coming year. I don’t say much about my wife on my blog but trust me she is the backbone to everything that I do. She keeps me grounded focused, and calm when I get frustrated which we all do sometimes, we just needed to change our Goals.

The first thing we did was to download and start on the Michael Hyatt Life Plan it was actually one of the most important things that we needed to do for ourselves Immediately so that we can map out exactly how we wanted our life to plan out. We noticed that most people don’t really plan out their lives like they should and really don’t know how often they should update or review our life goals. So as we go through those goals I wanted to share a few of them with you on how we are going to accomplish what we set out to do.

Religious – Continue to grow in God and in our Church home, and most importantly bring more people to Christ through our Ministry.

Family – Take our family to places we have never been before. Spend more time with each other, and our daughter and enjoy our time together.

Business – Focus on our Businesses and make sure that we help as many people as we can realize their dreams also through our business ventures.

After going through this process it really opened our eyes to the process of “Do goals or Be Goals”. So what did this mean for us? Well everyone wants to do goals but i haven’t heard much of people who want Be goals.

  1. Be better at Leadership
  2. Be focused on God
  3. Be more of a servant Leader
  4. Be dedicated to your team’s success
  5. Be a better Husband / Father

So we decided to change some of our Do Goals to Be goals. I think we can all Be better at everything that we do.

Question: Which area do you feel you can Be better and set better Be Goals?

I am a Traditional and Non-Traditional Business owner. I made the transition from Corporate cubicle to Home office. I went to work harder on myself than I did on my Job, and went from Darkness to light. I spend my days Consulting, Teaching, informing, & Learning. If I were to be honest I would have to say I need to imrpove on all 5 area’s. You really have me thinking today Lincoln. Great goals and a great post.

Kimanzi thanks. What was the first thought about the Do Goals or the 5 points?

I like the distinction- BE Goals! I think more of us need to focus on this.

I want to BE a better servant of God
I want to BE a better listener
I want to BE more faithful
I want to BE a better writer to bring God the glory

My list could go on and on….

TC I’m always interested to see what you have to say. What other Be goals would you add to the list?

      • http://tcavey.blogspot.com/ TCAvey

I think there is always room for improvement- I could always be a better friend, family member, steward, student(not that I am in school, just a student of life in general) and so on.

I agree that there is always room for improvement. I think even when we feel our goals have been met, there will be new goals, and new improvement areas.

    Love your approach Lincoln.

I am one of those who believe that setting goals without planning to change our behavior/habits is just setting ourselves up for failure. Someone said that we are human-beings not human-doings.

I downloaded Michael’s “creating your personal life plan” but haven’t got around to working on it yet. I should get cracking :)

Thanks for sharing this today. Blessings.

Ngina, that Life plan is really challenging it makes you think and really and set the course for your family. You are right if you don’t set quality goals then you will be sailing in the wind. Thank you for stopping by.

I’m personally working on my spiritual growth. I need to focus more time connecting with God and attending church services. Having goals and a balanced life is so important. My wife and I have a goal to attend at least 3 main services each month and 2 young adults services(Which we are in a leadership role). Having a new baby has been an adjustment on every aspect of our life.

    Great post today.

Dan, last year this time I was so unbalanced it was crazy. I was only focused on Business and nothing else. Now, I put GOD in the jar first and then started filling in the “Stuff” around him. Those are great goals you have there and I know having a new baby, blogging and Leading can be tiresome. Its not in vain! Keep pushing it.

Glad to hear your more balanced. Very true, the life of a blogger, full time worker and father can be busy. But it’s worth it. Thank you for the encouragement.

This is a great post. I need to work on being a better servant to God. My writing could use a lot of work. And it might not hurt me to work on being a better friend. I guess if I had to call these things that I need to do ‘goals’, it would also be appropriate for me to balance it with the fact that these are life-long actions. Perfection is something we often strive for, but need to realize that we cannot achieve it this side of the Kingdom. Becoming better at life (no matter what aspect) is to be a work in progress, with the Master Himself doing the work. Goals are good! But I prefer to see them as adventures.

Susan, I think we all need to focus on these areas and more actually. You make a good point that you prefer to see them as adventures. You always have great insight and a way of putting things awesome.

Lincoln, love this post. Andy Stanley first spoke on this topic, I believe, and I’ve found it transforming. A good mixture of “to be” and “to do” seems to work the best for me. Thanks!

Skip, I was listening to Dave Ramsey the other day and he also mentioned this very topic. I found it really intriguiging so I decided to write about it. I need to listen to Andy Stanley’s post on it. Thanks for mentioning it.

David, reading the bible all the way through should definitely be a do goal to accomplish. Not only once but multiple times because there are things that we will never quite grasp without study. We can never go wrong focusing on GOD. Thanks for your reminding us that reading the bible is a book we all should complete. I agree
