Building a Successful team – Wizard of Oz style

When building a successful team you are going to run into all types of personalities and its up to you to know how to work with others and how to deal with all the different personalities. The wizard of Oz is a perfect example of how a team is formed and comes together for one common goal. I asked my wife if this was too harsh, and she said NO this is Network Marketing reality, or as she put it the Hard Knock life.

You are going to be faced with individuals that have no courage, no heart, no brain and one that just wants to go home. You are going to know how to work with each of these individuals so that you can bring the best out of them and so that they can reach their true potential. In the industry of Network Marketing, you are going to be pushed to the limit but nevertheless it’s so rewarding to see the people who you partner with and the people who stay, the people who leave, and the people the grow with you. So, this is my experience with each of these personalities.

  1. The Scarecrow (No Brain) – You will run into people who join your organization the don’t believe that they have what it takes to succeed and its up to you to give them the knowledge to know that they can succeed in this industry. Its going to take you training this person consistently so that they know how to recruit, and how to sell product and build lasting relationships. Once you do that, this person will finally realize that they had it in them all along.
  2. The Lion – (Cowardly) – You are going to have some people enter your organization that tell you immediately that they are the Lion in the jungle and that they know it all. I’ve had someone tell me, “Lincoln, you need to be glad that I partnered with you because now, I am going to take you to the TOP single-handedly”. Needless to say this person is no longer around. So what happened? They were over compensating for short falls that they already had personally. When it was time for action they shrunk up and ran away. It was my job to help this person see the bigger picture. When someone talks too much, these are some of the warning signs that they need guidance to see the BIG picture of this industry.
  3. The Tinman – (Heart) – This character you will find lots of in your organization and this person just has a fear of the unknown. They have great intentions and do all the trainings, attend all the events, but they never seem to advance to the next levels in the compensation plan. This is because they lack the true reason WHY, the hot burning desire that comes from the Heart that can only come from within. It’s your duty as a mentor and Leader to help this person personally develop themselves into the Network marketer they can be and find that heart and desire to succeed.
  4. Dorothy – (Wants to go home) – You will also have a Dorothy in your organization and this person is someone who is determined to reach the top, they want to just get home. This is you! You are going to encounter all of these personalities and you are going to have to learn how to work with them not against them, and work together as a team to reach your goal of getting home. Sharing and caring with others, taking them on this journey with you will be a great ride, and its up to you to help lead from the middle of the pack.

Along your journey (The Yellow Brick road) you will encounter the wicked witch (your fears, your doubts, your tears, your cares, other people’s cares, negative friends and family members and the haters). This is where the TEAM comes into play. You all need to work together, each having their own little cares, but protecting each other from the wicked witch. I know you can do it, it’s going to be your journey, go out and Build your team!

Question: Along your yellow brick road. What triumphs or obstacles have you faced and overcame?
